The church of the holy spirit is the largest and most important church in Heidelberg. It has been constructed at the market square the middle of the old town, close to the Heidelberg castle. The tower - together with the castle's octagonal bell tower - dominates the cityscape.
The gothic hall church which has been built out of new red sandstone with a baroque roof and a baroque tower doom, is a unique work with a high artistic status.
It had been planned as a grave for the electors of the Palatinate and as a representative Lord's house of the residence city. The construction works started in 1398 were finished in 1515.
